We are looking to spend a week in Dubbo in January 2011, visiting the Zoo etc. We will be in a camper trailer. We have stayed at the BIG4 at Dubbo. Can anyone suggest another spot which is secure, with good amenities.
Thanks Ross

Hi Ross, It would be a long week in Dubbo.. Its fine there and a nice place to go but there is not too much to see there. Zoo, museum and the Old jail.Bathurst and Orange have things to do and see. maybe split the week between one of these others. Sorry i cant help with the camp spot, Big 4 are usually of high standard. Dubbo has never had much appeal to us as a place to stay and there always seem to be security issues. For an extended stay we would highly recommend Wellington Caves CP. It is a very quiet and spacious campground and CP, well grassed and shady with excellent amenities and camp kitchen. It is right off the highway, near a golf course and reasonably priced. There is a shop on site. It would be a very suitable base for a relaxing few days and you could travel to the various tourist sites quite easily. The Caves are also worth a look.

Another thumbs up for Wellington Caves. Very peaceful and quite, and plenty to do and see there as well, without paying for the caves tour.

Have a look at the Mid State Caravan Park
It's in Bourke Street Nth Dubbo on the Newell Highway.
Large fenced off area with grassed shady sites.

Here

From a Local; in Nth Dubbo.

Hi Ross

Do a site search as the same question has been asked several times in recent months.

I endorse suggestions of Wellington Caves CP, but it is a bit far to commute and get to the zoo early before the animals rest in the shadows.Peak Hill Caravan Park is another good one but again a long way to commute daily.

I expect it will be rather hot in January as it was quite hot when we were there October last year, and even taking our vehicle with us to do the zoo circuit (complete with car fridge and supply of drinking water), i still found i get very hot walking around. A ticket lasts two days and you need that time to see everything. There is a parking area just inside the zoo entrance where you can leave a camper while at the zoo if you don't want to leave it at the caravan park. Otherwise we enjoyed Dubbo, but we chose not to stay in town after we saw that all parks were near highways and we enjoy quiet nights like we had at Wellington Caves where we went for one night but stay a second night as it was so nice there.

On a recent trip to dubbo & area in a week we saw the following things....

Parkes Telescope (20 odd km north of Parkes)
Dubbo Zoo
Dubbo Gaol
Dubbo Observatory - excellent night sky demonstration & use of automatic positioning telescopes
Dubbo mini golf (next to observatory & rather difficult :) )
Wellington Caves - Caves & Mine tours
Bathurst Fossil & Mineral museum including a real sized T-REX skeleton
Adventure playground @ Orange for the kids

This all so I could go to the Bathurst 1000 for that last day!

I would agree, Wellington Caves would be an excellent base to easily reach all of these locations within an 1hr or so.

Cheers & Enjoy.
